What is an ICO File?
An ICO file contains the images used by Windows icons. They represent a file, folder, or Windows application or program. These are usually stored in different sizes to match the different settings of the DPI scale. Older ICO files included images up to 48×48 pixels, but the newer ICO sizes can range from 16×16 to 256×256 pixels.
The color depth of an ICO file can be less than or “equal to and more than” 32 bits. Images less than 32 bits of color store 2 bitmaps: the AND bitmap and the XOR bitmap, whereas the images equal to or more than 32 bits of color are 24-bit images with 8-bit channels for alpha compositing purposes.
